Amber color with small head, good retention and lacing. Decent malt sweetness upfront. Clean with a little caramel taste. Nice finishing bitterness. Hop flavors are nice (somewhat herbal), but understated. ultraspank (866), Dublin, Ohio, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jul 6, 2002 Had a bottle of this tonight after doing some yardwork. This brew pours a clear flat copper. The average sized bone colored head is creamy, mostly lasting and has decent lacing. The nose is burnt malt, dried fruit, and I’ll be damned if I can nail down the rest. The flavor is quite unlike anything I have tried to date (this is most definitely NOT an APA as it is currently listed for style). The ale starts caramel/honey sweet with a spicy pepper middle and a bisquity finish. The light body has a soft creamy texture, and an alcoholic feel to the finish. Most interesting. krisbierjaeger (844), dolores, Colorado, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 3, 2002 the end of my berger sampler 6 pack: it’s bittersweet. sweet ’cause this one might be the pick of the litter. overall, they weren’t overwhelming. let’s face it, they hardly whelmed at all. and i love a good whelming. but bitter ’cause i hear they’re going out of business, thats too bad--it’s like at a funeral, even if you think the guy was a festering corpuscle, you gotta say SOMEthing nice. i thought this ale was like an oktoberfest marzen. whiskey colored, and tho scalped, it still had a bakery of nice malty tones, a touch of sweetness, caramel and easygoing. maybe not a paulaner, but better than a corneal abrasion anyday. belgianhomebrew (646), Acworth, Georgia, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | May 13, 2002 Hint of caramel malt in aroma w/ little to no bitterness. Very slight bitterness in flavor. They must use caramel malt in most of their beers. Not really in the pale ale style. booyaatribe (453), Chicago, Illinois, USA

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 15, 2002 Almost copper in color with an odd sour nose. The flavor is good, but not what I would expect from a pale ale. At the bottom of the glass the sour flavors come forward. I’m not that familiar with alt beers, but this is not the flavor profile I expect from a pale ale.
