Hugo is named for my wife’s grandfather, Hugo Effenberger, who moved to Tillamook County from Germany in 1883. Hugo displays strong malt character, with earth, anise and chocolate notes, and a slightly sweet finish. This lager can complement any number of dishes, from salads to cheese to chicken. Released at Thanksgiving. (1.021 BG, 6.25%, 33 IBU, 20 SRM) Available only at Market of Choice

Bottle at PilsnerPeter’s Spring Gathering. Deep brown beer. Aroma is very clean. Light sweet malt, toasted grain, a touch of plum. Light bitterness initially, but then finishes with a lingering toffee/caramel sweetness. A touch of light wheatiness. Well-made bock.

Bottle at PPRBSP09. Pours a clear brown with a small head. Aroma of raisin, sweet malt, prunes, and alcohol. Flavor is a similar prune, raisin, boozy mess. I couldn’t drink this stuff. 5/4/5/3/10 (2.7/5)

This was a bit strange. Brownish sludge color with a sweet and fruity, leather and cardboard aroma. Taste is sweet and a little ricey, like an imperial budweiser.

Bottle. Aroma of raisins and prunes, brown sugar, all rather muddy smelling. Flavor got a bit better with richer bready notes and leafy hops both balancing out the sweeter, overripe fruit notes, though still didn’t get the job done for me.

The 22 oz bottle came from the Market of Choice in Ashland, Oregon. It poured a very attractive cranberry red that was so dark it almost looked black. It raised a nice off-white head and very sticky lacing rings. Nose is of roasted malts. Mouthfeel is light and watery however. The flavor is malty, with a lot of woody nuances. The finish is mild and shows a little pine hops. A decent and drinkable bock.

Bomber from Market of Choice. Nice to see some solid brews coming from near where I grew up, even if it is our old high school arch-rival! Nice deep red pour with a light bisque head. Very flavorful and chewy beer with a bready consistency and some caramel, fruit and brown sugar. Smell is almost entirely malts, but a light pine hop in the rear. Very nice beer.
