I can only describe the aroma as a strange mix between roasted malt and semi-sweet fruit (kind of remind me of Weyerbacher raspberry impy stout). Taste is also a mix between the elderberry sweetness/sourness and the bitterness coming form the roasted malt. Overall, I would say that I enjoy this because it is out of the ordinary and that seems refreshing. albert007 (409), Penobsquis, New Brunswick, Canada

Just a bit of fruity sweetness shows itself, especially in the aftertaste. nick76 (2665), Tampa, Florida, USA

Smells like a dessert bread and somewhat like a stout. And looks much like one too save the fact that it had no head but thankfully was carbonated. Tastes just like it smells sweet and malty with a definite coffee taste. And it even tastes a little like oak with just the right amount of bitterness added. A very light berry taste to this one though. The only thing bad about this ale really, is that the elderberries are hard to taste. I wish it was stronger. Still this is one good ale. Aftertaste is like stout but with a little of berries. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA

This is just a very watered down stout. Has all the same characters except body, and is very bland overall. SuIIy (1453), Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 31, 2005 Dark brown on the pour, tan thin head around the edges of the glass. Nose of toasted malt, berries, coffee, like others have said, similar to those of a stout. Flavor is dry and consists of tartness (from the elderberries?), roast, smoke, and finishes just as dry with the fruity characteristics becoming more pronounced.
