Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

Bottle. Pours with very little carbonation over a coppery body. Aromas are herbal with an apple juice backbone. Flavor is apple with medicinal herbs. Not really my cup of tea... or ale...

This beer is very odd. It has a slightly floral aroma but when drunk, it has a very distinctive flavor which defies categorization. I can only say that it has a slightly berry like nature. I drank the entire bottle trying to put my finger on what it tasted like. This is a good, interesting adventure in a bottle.

This beer is very sweet in a way that no other normal brew can be. Heather is what was used to keep the beer fresh before hops became used. This beer does taste like a german style lager with a very pleasantly sweet taste mixed with it. It is very enjoyable and very drinkable. light bodied.

Bottle from Market Street Wine Shop Downtown Charlottesville. Slightly hazy reddish amber pour with a big head that quickly disappears. Moderate lacing. Veru fruity, flowery aroma. Taste is the same with some more fruit (plum) and a hint of oat. Interesting. Thin body.

Historic lightish amber heather ale. It sounds cliché that an ale brewed with flowers will taste flowery, but it does. A fruity flower. It’s alright, but I’d be interested to taste a different brewery’s take on this style ale.

Pours an amber-orange with normal clarity and a small head that mostly diminishes. A sweet aroma and I detect some honey, coriander and maybe clove or mint. Very unique first taste which is probably the heather or sweet gale...I like it! Very floral in flavor with a slight bitterness. Light mouthfeel with lively carbonation. I really liked this one.
