Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

Pours a light amber color with a small thin white head. Very pleasant floral aroma, but the taste was a bit thin. I’m glad i tried this beer, as I’d never had a heather ale before, but I was not overly impressed. Maybe this just isn’t my kind of beer.

Pours a light clear brown with no head. A strange flower aroma. Tastes of slight sweetness with a thin water like finish. Wasn’t impressed. Cool bottle though.

Parsnip sweet snout. Deep gold pour with white froth. Chewy maltiness drinking way beyond its strength, a bit like a full-bodied Biere Du garde. Revolting. Nose becoming more sappy and perfumey as it warms. No, it’s waxy, leathery and resinous and I just don’t like it. Where’s the flowers?

Nice golden colour with an ok white head. Flowery aroma which is also found in the flavour along with some spicyness ending with a nice dry aftertaste. A good Scottish ale I must say.

A nice piece of history and a interesting beer. I should revisit this some time. Page 172 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide only 406 out 500 Classic Brews to go.

This was a great suprise! I admit I bought this beer for the label and nothing else. The pour was a dark amber with a thin white head. The aroma was roasted malt and spicy. At first sip, the malts took over but as I finished, there was a certain spiciness to the finish.

Bottle from Utobeer. Clear amber body with a thin white head. Smell of dark berries. Light mouthfeel with taste of sweet, black currant supported by malty notes. Diluted. Unusual, but pretty fair (03.02.2007).

Extremely meaty beer. Not like anything I have ever had before. Some honey was present. The only way I would describe this is beefy. Unique and amazing.
