Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

Bottle. Poured a clear yellow with no head. Musty aroma, with some notes of lemongrass and flowers. Very flat mouthfeel, a bit astringent. A very bland ale that’s on the same lines as the worst pilsners. Disappointing.

Bottle. Dark amber, with thin off-white head. Malty, spicy aroma with hints of flowers and herbs (but different than hop aromas). Smooth mouthfeel, some sweetness, ad really not much bitterness in the finish. OK, interesting, but there are much better ales for half the price.

a bit apprehensive at first, worried I would be let down. However, impressed enough to try it again.

bottle. Poured a dark gold, with minimal to no head. Floral and mild spice nose and flavor. I was expecting something worse, but this went done smooth. Nothing to brag about, but worth trying.

Pours golden/amber color with a white head. Aroma is of heather flowers, spices, and some sweet malts. Huge floral flavor with some spices and a sweet finish. Probably the most floral flavor I’ve had on a beer. Not bad but it’s nothing I would go searching for.

Pours dark gold with little head to speak of. Malty with a large heather influence in taste and aroma. Palate is balanced but mouthfeel is a bit thick. Dry finish. A nice, if costly, diversion from normal beer.

Honey-colored with some bubbles, but no head. Apple-cinnamon aroma. Malty flavor without much complexity. Finishes smooth and dry. Enjoyable overall.

This poured from the 11.2oz bottle with a pleasant warm orange color and a well-former white topping of white bubbles. There’s a nice little flowery aroma that you’d expect from a beer made with heather. The flavors are bolder and brighter than I might expect ... very much flowery, almost mulchy! Herbal and green, I feel like yelling some William Wallace quote. Beauty. (#2687, 2/6/2007)
