Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

A nice Scots ale and different from the others - gotta be the heather! It poured an orange colour with a generous amount of sediment (read: cloudy), and the head was a rather small white one; short-lived and no lacing were the order of the day here. Aroma was nice and gentle although hard to detect at first, somewhat floral; again I credit the heather. Taste and mouthfeel were both pleasant and clean, along with a nice aftertaste. A nice beer.

Bottle sample at Muckfest 2009 Day 1. Cloudy orange color with barely any head. Sweet malt aroma with some hop and noticeable spice. Spicy cinnamon and nutmeg up front with some sweet malt and a dry finish. Wasn’t sure what to expect but either way, good brew.

Pours a nice pale goldish orange with medium white head, minimal lacing. Aroma is a pleasant floral, spices, slight malt, and a bit of an herbal nature. Flavor matches well and is very smooth and easy to drink. Definitely different and very enjoyable.

330 ml bottle from Bevmo Salinas. Lightly hazy yellow orange with a small pale yellow head. Nose is spicy with floral and caramel notes and a background hint of grassy hops and caramel. Flavor is light bitterness, herbally smoothing to my throat, and some light caramel. Different!

Pours with a medium fluffy white head and a hazy blonde color. Aroma is spicy with some ginger and lots of floral notes with just a touch of rubbing alcohol. Flavor is like the aroma very strong with a spicy ginger, some slight grainy maltiness, and a bit of alcohol. I’d have thought this was stronger than what it was with as much alcohol seems to show through but I like it none the less. The flavor is very herbal, almost like a very good herbal tea. The palate is soft; this is a very nice beer to drink.
