Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

Interestingly enough, this isn’t even the best heather ale I’ve had. That was Burghead Pictish Ale from Alameda in Portland, OR. Still, this is a great beer.

Amber misty ale. Light floreal aroma. Herbal, the heather outstands. Hop-like final. I will not look for it.

Clear golden with medium off white head. Sweet fruity aroma with ginger notes. Flavor likeswise with caramel notes.

Nice earthy aroma, but a bland flavor. I don’t see what the appeal is.

Bottled (BB 10/2007). Dark honey golden color, small white head. Herbal aroma: birch leaves, pinewood. Light spicey, peppery flavor, dry. A bit similar to some Belgian ales.

Dark golden, hazy, beautiful and lasting head. The aroma is malty and sweetish. The flavour is completely it’s own. Initially I think it’s a bit thin, but after a while it gets more body. The malt is dominant, but the heater flowers are very clear too, and enhances the brew with exciting spice. The heather honey is there too. The bittereness is low. A nice and fun beer, a bit on the perhaps too sweet side...

Nice golden colour with an ok white head. Flowery aroma which is also found in the flavour along with some spicyness ending with a nice dry aftertaste. A good Scottish ale I must say.
