Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

330 ml bottle from a historic ales of scotland gift pack. pours golden with a small white head. floral aromas with some malt sweetness and earthy graininess. floral flavours with grainy feel and a bit a malt backbone. interesting but not a fav of mine.

bottle poured an amber in color with a thin white foam layer on the top. decent carbination, smell is caramel malt, flowery yeast, nutmeg, and some earthy tones. taste is lighter than the smell leads on, malts are fairly smooth, dry on the finish, and some sweetness. definitely a different beer in a nice way, the heather has a very garden grown spices taste like it could come from my own herb garden. interesting to think of people thousands of years ago drinking this stuff, lots of heather instead of hops.

Drank with Ramenen. Bottle: Very different, taste is on the sweet side, licorice, flowery, herbal. Not bad for 2000 B.C.

Mild, but has a slight edge on the tongue. It is brewed using heather flowers and scottish malt, so you get a light petal texture/flavor across the palate. This is an interesting beer to ponder and enjoy with it’s unique characteristics.

This is pretty good. I like the taste of the heather (I guess that is what I’m tasting, not sure what heather actually tastes like). I thought it was pretty good and I don’t feel like a sucker. PS - beer is not MADE from hops. They are added to give more flavor. Hops were not even used until relatively modern times (although I am glad they are!)

(Bottle). Sweet honey aroma. Hazy golden body, small white head. Flavor is different, as should be expected. Honey, earthiness, well balanced. Mild but flavorful. A nice brew.

Deep golden/orange hazy look with a fine white bubbling head. Aroma is heather spicey and honey sweet. The flavor is really nice. Interresting spicey notes without being too weird, some sweetness in there and bitterness in the finish. Good brew

A 0.5L bottle from Alko shop. Pale head. Pale golden yellow colour. Slightly sour flowery taste. Some fruitiness. Average carbonation. Malty and winelike tatse. Some bitterness at the end.
