Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

500 mL bottle poured into a mug. Slightly hazed goldenrod color with a very weak off-white head. Even with vigor this beer produces hardly any foam, and what little is there collapses within a minute. Aroma strikes of rosemary and doughy malt. Reminds me precisely of rosemary sourdough bread dipped in olive oil. Lightly malty with a honey sweetness and a dose of semi-bitter rosemary. Well-balanced. Carbonation is moderate, body is medium-thin, finish is bone dry and short. Quite drinkable but lacks complexity and doesn’t keep my interest very long.

Bottle: Pours hazy brownish yellow with a thin bubbly off white head. Aroma is predominantly floral with a sweet honey, and earthy maltiness. Flavour is a little flat for me, mostly flowery tasting and slightly fruity, with a dry bitterness to the finish.

What a beer! First of all, it’s that it’s made at all - using heather instead of hops. Not what I would have thought as being floral. It has a nice persistant head. Very spicy aroma. The flavor is a mixture of malt, hint of alcohol, some bitterness, marmalade, yeast. Funky color. Nice lace. got this in a beer of the month but they have it also at the Bodega downtown here in La Crosse.

Lovely sweet and distinctly spicy aroma supposedly from the heather flowers. Flavour is nice and spicy too on top of a malty base ending in a subtle, dry (gale) bitter finish. A very nice ale - I wonder how it goes with a single malt? Btw. I wish my brother would travel to Scotland more often (he just bought me this beer AND found an Ardbeg Uigedail for just 35£!).

Nice golden body with good cloudiness. good pines, peat, heather and cardamon. Excellent spices, hops, cardamon, and pine in the body. Very clean ending.

Nose of flowers and brown sugar. Pours a medium clover honey with golden highlights. The dense off-white creamy head is mostly lasting with fair lacing. Wow! The flavor assaults the tongue with heavy malt and jabs of spice and citrus zing here and there. The medium creamy body is lively and the finish is a touch cloying. A nice surprise.
