Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

11.2 oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazed orange-bronze body with a finger-width, off-white head that dissipates quickly and leaves a light lacing. Aroma is malty with sweet, honey flowers and a light peaty must. A touch of lemon and vanilla too. Flavor is soft and full malts up front with a nice, flowery honey sweetness. A light lemon, vanilla, and buttery maltiness too. Finishes with a prominently spiced, peaty earth and a sweet honey-citric maltiness that lingers for a good amount of time. Medium bodied, silky smooth, and dry. Overall, a tasty, sweet honey spiced beer. The flavors are integrated really nicely and offer a crisp, tasty ale. Solid.

Light, straw body with a medium malt body that is suprisingly rich and full of character. Some sweet fruit essence. Slightly grassy and flowery with a nice sweet finish. Suprisingly refreshing and satisfying. As always, like the bottle art - adds to the experience.

22 May 2006 - Sweet light roasted choc malt with spiceness. Murky brown-orange colour, poor head and reasonable lacing. Sweet spicy licorice malt hop flavour. Finishes with sweet spicy malt .

Bottle. Deep orange with a patchy head. Aroma is sweet citrus with a touch of pine. Flavor is sourish with a very unique resiny tinge. Really different and enjoyable. Thick and full-bodied.

This beer could be likened to a dry white wine. I am not sure if it wasnt brewed with herbs/spices or if it was hops. Very floral in aroma and flavor. A very interesting beer to say the least. Also, very enjoyable. Structurally, the head was soft and foamy, the body crisp and clear and finish was sweet. A very well crafted beer that I wish was more accessable.

Tasted 01/04/2005. 500ml bottle from Rumble’s, Wellington. Pours a brilliant golden amber with the faintest red hue. A puffy pure white head sits atop and beckons my nose into the glass. Before long the head is gone. The nose is a soft boquet of honey and grass with a slight mineral hint. The medium mouthfeel delivers a strong malt flavour with a touch of earthy grassiness. Finishes surprisingly clean. Very moreish...

500 mL brown bottle purchased from Home Service Beer Beverage Discount Center, Glenview, NY. Bottled dated 10/05 and consumed expired beer on 11/05. Hazy light brown ale having no discernable head. Light carbonation. Light sweet malt aroma. Light-to-medium bodied ale that starts with a light sweet malt and honey flavors. Finishes with light dryness and bitterness. Though expired, no off-flavors detected. A rather thin and watery bland tasting beer that resembles a mead.

From the bottle. Aroma is sweet with caramel malt forward with light roast tones and some heather. Appearance is light gold with a persistant white head. Flavor is sweet malt with herb tones forward followed by some slight sour and tart flavors. Mouthfeel is medium/light bodied with good creaminess and even a creamy finish. Overall, very good, well made and not too sweet for such an old style. The sourness even works as a fairly good compliment.
