Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

Bottle. Fascinating - a complex honey-floral nose, then a wonderful warm, sweet, foxy, honeyed taste with a dark malt, slightly bitter after taste. Mmmmm. [3.2]
Re-rate. Gravity Cask, Kent Beer Festival, with Nuffield & Duff. Soft, gentle, floral citric aroma. Bitter wood up front. More interesting than it is enjoyable. However, it is jolly enjoyable. [3.4]

Poured a clear golden color with very little head. Strong aroma of stale flowers, and tasted about like that as well. Quite displeasing on all fronts, but this was a 10/03 bottle... I hope that was the problem.

peat moss in there, bitter, long dry finish. Citrus, honey, some malts. Barley in there. Understated carbonation. I wonder how this would be three years aged.

Bottle (330ml). Poured a murky orange-gold with a very small head. Aroma is very light, very high-sweet - I get honeycomb, clover, plenty of malt, fresh-cut hay and some sweet fruit (orange and apricot) as well as mild floral and pine/spruce resiny notes. Taste is strongly of dried flowers, with pine resin, citrusy malt and some musty, mushroomy earthiness. Finishes quite quickly, but the hops announce themselves on the way out the door. Mouthfeel is astringent. I can’t help but think of turpentine as I drink it - but for all that it’s very pleasant, just as enjoyable as the first bottle I had back in 1998.

This ale tasted like I suspected, bitter, malty bit acidic aftertaste. It had decent head. Despite all the positives it failed to impress me. Thanks Doug !!!

Medium orange gold color. Small head. Aroma is malty, peaty, herbal and slightly sweet. A medium bodied traditional ale. Sweet and fruity with hints of peet and smoke. I won’t talk about the malts or hops in this beer, because I am not sure it has either. Malts are sweet. No hops. Nice carbonation. An interesting beer, Not sure I would drink this one all the time, but it interesting nonetheless. It has a lot more sweet wine like qualities than a beer. Heather Ales makes some very interesting beers; this one like their other traditional/non-traditional ales is worth trying. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
