Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

Bottled. Small white head, light hazy, golden colour. Impressive and fresh aroma, aromatic herbs and roots (gentian, juniper, licorice root, rosemary, mint...). Aromatic honey sweetness (rhododendron honey), restrained bitter (aromatic, "juniper berries" bitterness), light acidic taste. Very soft, weak carbonation, medium body, dry texture, long and aromatic aftertaste. A bit empty mouthfeel.

In the 11.2 oz. bottle. Deep golden color. Strong spiced aroma that is mellowed by the flowery scent. Moderate carbonation. Long lasting head. Smooth tasting with a perfume flavor. Interesting beer. Smoother than the Highland brewing Heather ale.

Bottle from Super Saver. Pours somewhat hazy deep golden/dark straw with 1-finger, creamy, perfectly uniform off-white head. The aroma is bready malty, with some honey-toned malt, fruit, and honey. The taste is malty and piney, with some hops, honey, apricot, and a sprucy note. Medium palate that is smooth and fairly complex. Gets flowery and morepiney as it warms. This one is underrated by half a point or so, and well worth seeking out. Get ya some!

500ml bottle. Filtered and mildly carbonated. Medium frothy cream coloured head, body amber in colour. Nose pine/heather flower/grape/apple/mild hop. Medium bodied with good long fruity finish. I have it on good authority that there are hops in this as well as the heather. I’ve had some very good cask conditioned pints of this, and one or two stinkers.

Remembering all those beers gives me like vomit feelings. IT was nice, and very crafty too. But this Ales are very heavy.

A welcome revival of an ancient Scots tradition. However, like tartan trousers, it’s more popular with visitors than locals. It’s freely available in tourist outlets around the country but try asking for it at your local pub... It poured a copper colour with a creamy head. The nose, as you might expect, is floral, like the slopes of Ben Nevis on a wet summer’s day (are there any other kind?) However, there are also sweet malt notes there, like fresh-made Orkney Fudge. It’s a dry, smooth ale - perhaps a little oily. Hints of dried fruit and toffee in a complex swirl of flavours. I find it a little too sweet in the finish to be truly satisfying but commend the brewer for the enterprise. (Bottle)
