Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

Bottled. Hazy gold colour with a fine white, slightly lacy head. Lovely smooth malty flavour. Very pleasing mouth feel, silky smooth and more’ish.

Deep golden colour with large frothy white head. Malty/heathery aroma (go fig), fizzy spiced taste. A bit like drinking cold black pudding with HP sauce. Quite nice and different. A bit of a lavender quality too. I gave it 16 overall just to account for the originality.

Bottle: Brilliant amber ale with a rocky-sticky 3 finger cap that laces the supreme hell out of the glass sides! Looks great...Lottsa malt! Siganture aromas for this brewer: floral wild botanicals with a musty-woody herbaceous decernment, some clover honey-like sweetness. Rigid primal malt spine, medium body, floral-herbal-grainy character Up front a rush a solid coarse ground bready malts just as they begin to sweeten, a flood of herbal-botanical flavors rush in to keep them from cloying...nice herbal-musk mellon tastes devlop...finish is mellow, soft and accentuated with a nice herbacious heather-like taste that lingers as lightly bittering aftertaste with the hopping. I’m really impressed with the ales from this brewer....consistantly malt-herbal tasting and infinitely mellow with a soft mineral mouth.

Light palate, clears off the tongue nearly instantly. Smells lightly sweet, lacks any distinctive character. Not bold or remarkable enough to warrant $2.50 per bottle.

A nice piece of history and a interesting beer. I should revisit this some time. Page 172 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide only 406 out 500 Classic Brews to go.

[WBA Styles Tasting] Clear yellow color. Very distinct flowery aroma... herbal, almost root-like. No real hop presence. Spicy, herbal flavors, very interesting-- almost like a curry spice character. Fruity apple flavors underneath. Complex and slightly tart. Finishes clean. Overall, quite tasty and interesting.
