Commercial Description:
Bottle: Filtered
Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture.
Into the boiling bree of malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather are added, then after cooling slightly the hot ale is poured into a vat of fresh heather flowers where it infuses for an hour before being fermented.
A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt charachter, a spicy herbal flavour and dry wine like finish.
Recommended with rich and Spicy foods.
Drink slightly chilled from a fluted glass.

Cloudy dark orange / amber. Floral with sweet pleasant malt aroma. Great balance of malts & hops, which made if very smooth start to finish. Notes of spices, herbs, flowers, and honey.

331ml bottle from my "Historic Ales of Scotland" pack from the LCBO. Pours a pure copper colour with a small white head. The aroma is very nutty, with a touch of something strange in it, but very faintly and subtly. The flavour is much the same, but with more of the strange subtle flavour, that I guess is from the heather flowers. It’s surprisingly fresh tasting considering it’s an import. The finish is actually quite interesting, a little sweet bite on the tip of my tounge, not so much malty, most likely the heather flowers? It’s actually the most pleasant and interesting aspect of this beer. Lighter mouth-feel than I was expecting. Over-all an interesting brew, very enjoyable, but I wish the flavours were a tad stronger, as it seems a bit subdued. Good stuff though.

Light copper brown beer with quite big blond head. Aroma is quite great, balanced with something exotic, "sweet pine needles", bitterness and some cinnamon? Flavour is more simple than aroma, but still quite similar: dry, pine needles and old-fashioned style. Nice and balanced to drink. Different beer with interesting "exotic", definitety worth to dry.

Taste 3/9 bottle. Looks: pale gold body with a thin white top. Aroma: Orange peel, clove and spice. Taste: Clove and orange peel in a thin bodied brew that is both sweet and spicy. Finishes clean and fruity.

330ml bottle. Cloudy and thick light brown color. Full of sediment. Sweet with a mild herbal finish. Tastes mildly of honey. Very easy drinking. I had held this beer in higher regard in previous samplings, maybe this bottle is a little past it’s prime.

Pours clear goldy orange with little head. Smell is extremely reminiscent of the pumpkin ale I had last week -- so much so that I’m not sure which smells like which. Cream soda also -- the aroma is very sweet. The beer is quite refreshing. Starts with sweet caramel, progresses through a strong offering of (I guess) heather flavour (quite good), and finishes with a lovely dose of hops which sticks on the dry palate it leaves. Medium body. Nice.

Nose of herbs, spices and other vegetation gives this beer a wonderful bouquet surpassing many other beers for its sheer distinctiveness. Pours a golden colour beer with a small head. Taste is hoppy, with herbs and spcies (must be the heather) being present. Not much malt is present. All in all another really enjoyable beer from Williams.
