Gooseberry Wheat Ale
From the Gaelic "Groseid". Since at least the 16th century Scots monks and alewives brewed indigenous drinks from cereals, wild herbs and ripe fruits. Tibbie Shiels green Grozet was immortalised by such Scots literati as Sir Walter Scott, Jas Hogg. (The Ettrick shepherd) and Robert Burns whoconsidered it a most convivial drink.
Brewed with lager malt, wheat, bog myrtle, hops and meadowsweet then secondary fermented with ripe Scottish gooseberries.
A pale golden beer, with a refreshing fruit aroma, clean palate, fruity wheat flavour and crisp finish. Recommended with, light foods, pastas and salads.
Drink well chilled in a tall glass.

Pours clear yellow with a medium white head. Nose is gooseberry and faint malt. Flavor of rather sweet malts with a strong gooseberry backbone. Thin and watery mouthfeel. Is interesting but not memorable.

Smoky, grainy aroma. Tastes of soft spices and gooseberries. Quite light and sweet.

Bottle (500ml). Poured clear golden yellow with a good sized, dense, frothy, white head which was mostly lasting. Aroma was of lime bitters with lemon citrus, musty grainy malts, herbs and some cranberries. Flavor was of lemon & lime citrus with sweet grainy malts, light notes of grassy hops, mandarin and some light herby/bread notes. Light bodied with lively carbonation, a dry/watery mouthfeel and a refreshing finish.

A hazy golden ale with a thin white head. Sweet honey malt aroma, oxidized, some fruity orange notes. In mout, a sweet biscuitty malt, honey, light oxidation signs, no hop bitterness. Medium bodied. Overall, a bit boring. LCBO gift set 2006. BB Apr 2007. Enjoyed August 20, 2008.

Aroma is sweet, with sweet malts, sweet fruit (berries) and herbs. It’s transparent golden in color, with a thin white collar. It’s flavor is a pleasant medley of moderate fruits, medium sweet malts, and mild tartness. The palate feel is supra-smooth, dry, crisp, nicely effervescent, with a nice light malt aftertaste.

Pours a light gold, with little head. Indistinct, fruity aroma. Flavor is honey and gooseberry, sweet and tart, with a subtle wheat aftertaste. Pleasant and refreshing, but unremarkable.
