Gooseberry Wheat Ale
From the Gaelic "Groseid". Since at least the 16th century Scots monks and alewives brewed indigenous drinks from cereals, wild herbs and ripe fruits. Tibbie Shiels green Grozet was immortalised by such Scots literati as Sir Walter Scott, Jas Hogg. (The Ettrick shepherd) and Robert Burns whoconsidered it a most convivial drink.
Brewed with lager malt, wheat, bog myrtle, hops and meadowsweet then secondary fermented with ripe Scottish gooseberries.
A pale golden beer, with a refreshing fruit aroma, clean palate, fruity wheat flavour and crisp finish. Recommended with, light foods, pastas and salads.
Drink well chilled in a tall glass.

Bottle poured a clear light copper with a lingering ring of ivory foam. Aromas of gooseberry, wheat and light vanilla. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of wheat, gooseberry and light citrus with a crisp dry lightly bitter finish.

Pale yellow with a small white head. Herbal aroma with thyme and the like. Dry and herbal flavour with a sourness that rubbed me the wrong way.

Pours with a yellowbody topped by a thin to medium thick head with some lacing. It’s slightly sweet and fruity wtih a touch of spice. Light to medium bodied and a touch tingly.

From a set of four tasters shared with the Knights. Poured a yellowish gold with soapy head. Sweet Bread/wheat nose and pallet. Thin and a bit watery. Good session but nothing really bringing me back for more.

Strong fruity aroma, some wheat. Slightly orange. tranlucent but not quite clear appearance. Relatively small head. The flavor is dominated by the gooseberries, and has a bready wheat-like quality underneath. Overall pleasant, a little thin. Palate is left with slight sweetness, but it doesn’t last long at all. Nice effort. I happen to be very interested in traditional ales, which remind us all of the timeless quality of beer.

Pours a clear straw colour with a frothy white head that clings to the glass and leaves spotty lacing. The aroma is of botanicals (gooseberries so they claim), wheat and lemon citrus. The flavour is zesty, herbal and short-lived, fading out almost immediadtely. The berry flavour accompanies a citrusy, malted wheat profile. It’s balanced, quenching and pleasant, but it lacks in body, complexity and palate duration. A nice session beer, but nothing to marvel at.
