Gooseberry Wheat Ale
From the Gaelic "Groseid". Since at least the 16th century Scots monks and alewives brewed indigenous drinks from cereals, wild herbs and ripe fruits. Tibbie Shiels green Grozet was immortalised by such Scots literati as Sir Walter Scott, Jas Hogg. (The Ettrick shepherd) and Robert Burns whoconsidered it a most convivial drink.
Brewed with lager malt, wheat, bog myrtle, hops and meadowsweet then secondary fermented with ripe Scottish gooseberries.
A pale golden beer, with a refreshing fruit aroma, clean palate, fruity wheat flavour and crisp finish. Recommended with, light foods, pastas and salads.
Drink well chilled in a tall glass.

Interesting piece of history, hint of goose berries didn’t taste any bog myrtle but then again I never had the need to taste bog myrtle. Part of the historic ales pack. Page 201 of Michael Jackson’s Great Beer Guide only 373 out of 500 Classic Brews from this book to go.

(Bottle) Pours light hazy, light amber. Spicy and fruity aroma with notes of sweet gosseberries. Light malty and wheaty. Small undertones of vanilla, mint and somthing cinamon like. Fruity flavour with undertones of spices, sweet malt and hints of wheat. Notes of gosseberries in the finish. Medium sweet and pretty smooth mouthfeel. Light to medium body.

Bottle. Pours straw yellow with black floaties and a small white head. The aroma is berries, some strong grainy notes. The flavor is berries, and lots of ’em. The middle is tart but a bit cardboardy, and leads to a chalky berry finish. The aftertaste is a bit cloying and should fade much faster than it does.

Weak head, sweet smelling, light goldeny colour. Very plain flavour, slightly sweet, nothing stands out. Refreshing though.. Nothing worth writing home over..

bottle - Pours clear and straw colored with a thin head. Smells sweet and malty. The flavor is malt and those mild, sour gooseberries. The body is on the thin side while the finish is actually kind of refreshing. Not bad.

Pours clear golden with a fully receding white head. Aroma of gooseberries, honey, peat, and slight toffee. Taste is lightly sweet, apple cider, peat, herbs, and wood. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with very soft carbonation (around 1.5vol). An interesting beer with strange spices, but I’m not sure if I’d drink this again.

Bottle. Poured a small white head that mostly diminished, no lacing, minimal carbonation, and a straw yellow hue. Nose was wheat, malty, berries, sweet, and a note of honey. Flavor was wheat, malty, watery, thin, and berries. Mouthfeel was water, thin and smooth. Light body. Not too impessive IMO and not one to seek out again.
