Gooseberry Wheat Ale
From the Gaelic "Groseid". Since at least the 16th century Scots monks and alewives brewed indigenous drinks from cereals, wild herbs and ripe fruits. Tibbie Shiels green Grozet was immortalised by such Scots literati as Sir Walter Scott, Jas Hogg. (The Ettrick shepherd) and Robert Burns whoconsidered it a most convivial drink.
Brewed with lager malt, wheat, bog myrtle, hops and meadowsweet then secondary fermented with ripe Scottish gooseberries.
A pale golden beer, with a refreshing fruit aroma, clean palate, fruity wheat flavour and crisp finish. Recommended with, light foods, pastas and salads.
Drink well chilled in a tall glass.

330 ml bottle - pours pale gold with a frothy white head. Nice hoppy aroma, along with a tiny bit of wheat and some gooseberry. The sweetness of the malt is predominant in the taste right off the bat, followed closely by a light fruity sweetness, though it seems more extract and less "ripe Scottish gooseberries". Don’t really know what bog myrtle or meadowsweet are, but there is an overall taste that most closely resembles chamomile tea, along with some earthiness. Mainly a sweet drink, no bitterness or hops in the mouth, though some are promised in the nose. Ah well, whatever.

Good god, nothing like a bad beer to get one’s attention. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a beer this bad. I will give it this though, it had a best before date of October 2000! Nothing like having an aged fruit beer! Alright! Aroma was like putrid cereal with rancid blueberries. The aroma nearly made me dump, but I trucked on. Appearance was a brown, hazy, absolutely zero head beer. Seriously. This beer had no head, not even a little foam. Hell, I’d seen more foam in the urinal at my local pizza joint. Mouthfeel was watery thin. In fact, it was more watery than water. Flavor was somewhat sweet with a hint of some kind of berry flavor. The only thing I can think of was eating Capt’n Crunch with rancid cereal. Just nasty. If I even land a better example of this beer I will of course re-rate. Ugh.

Poured a straw yellow with rosey hues with a slight clumping white head. Sweet, floral, fruity aroma. I don’t usually enjoy these types of beers but I enjoyed the flavor very much. Very subtle and fruity with notes of grapes and honey. Slightly watery on the palate. Far from outstanding but entirely drinkable.

33 cl bottle, Shelburne. No head, fruity aroma, sour taste. Champagne-like, would suit food accompaniment in that vein.

Bottled. Oner of tesco’s exiting new range. I like this beer from the start cos its lagered which is unusual for a scottish micro. Pours a deep gold with no head but retains a good level of sparkle. First aromatic impression is a little chezchy but really it is flowery, slightly hoppy balanced against malt. Aroma is very full and like a sweet smelling perfume. Taste is good. Sweet fruitiness some malt and wheat and a gooseberry tang. Finish thins dissapointingly and little lasting bitterness but altogether an intruiging scottish beer.

Bottle, Good fruity aroma. Sour flowery smell. Notes of citrus. Orange color with quickly diminishing white head. Flavor is hay-like wheat up front. Light. Slight bready finish. Fruity quality. A bit bitter on the duration. Light mouthfeel and palate. Refreshing.

bottle from Xmas gift pack: Poured a bright golden ale into the glass with a 3 finger rocky cap that laces well. Aromas of cracked grain and botanicals with a wonderful musty-woody tone. Primal malt spine, medium body, herbal-herbacious malty character in a mellow lagered capsule. As advertised: frontside is a montage of hard cereals, wild botanicals and a nice hop presense.....carries through and developes mid palate...finishes wet with a nice mellon-like taste. The brewer has obviously acheived their objective of mingling native Sctotish herbs/plants with traditional brews...very nice delivery.
