Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version at 4.5% is available in August and September.
Gooseberry Wheat Ale
From the Gaelic "Groseid". Since at least the 16th century Scots monks and alewives brewed indigenous drinks from cereals, wild herbs and ripe fruits. Tibbie Shiels green Grozet was immortalised by such Scots literati as Sir Walter Scott, Jas Hogg. (The Ettrick shepherd) and Robert Burns whoconsidered it a most convivial drink.
Brewed with lager malt, wheat, bog myrtle, hops and meadowsweet then secondary fermented with ripe Scottish gooseberries.
A pale golden beer, with a refreshing fruit aroma, clean palate, fruity wheat flavour and crisp finish. Recommended with, light foods, pastas and salads.
Drink well chilled in a tall glass.

Hazy pale gold body topped with a thick and lasting white foamy head. Nice malty/hoppy aroma with gooseberries and herbal notes. Well-balanced and very refreshing taste. Unfortunately, it lacks some strenght and only leaves a timid bitter/bready aftertaste. Enjoyable average summer fruitbeer. Thank you PrimeMinister!

Real hazy light wheat color with a bright white head. Fruity wheat aroma, somewhat yeasty. Sharp fruit flavor and a little acidic. Sweetness appears later with the wheat aftertaste. A little watery, a little bitter. Expected a little more flavor, stays mellow but yet refreshing. A nice beer but needs more.

Draught, Bon Accord, Glasgow. Wee correction for austinpowers - all Heather Ales use hops. They just use other stuff as well. Light gold. Good 1/4" head. In the draught version this tastes like a pleasant light bodied bitter with a little fruit. Refreshing.

Cloudy blonde color with a thin white head. Aroma and flavor of wheat and fruits. Light to medium body. Strange but not bad.

I’m a slut for historical reproduction beers. I buy them compulsively. Murky dark piss color with virtually no head. Weak aroma of pears and sweet woodruff. Thin on the palate, no clearly defined flavors, just hints of wheat, possibly some weak berries, and some stale perfume. Screw this, just read krisbierjaeger’s review, he sums the entire thing up nicely.

normally i don’t cut a weak beer much slack. cutesy fruit beers especially get my hackles up-- but for this supposedly venerable relic of brewing antiquity, one conceived by gentle minds and humble good hearts-- and made of locally available ingredients, i laid out a spool of extra slack. industrial grade slack a mile long. almost enough slack to forgive a wad of consumptive dock worker’s flim in the bottle. on the other hand, if it were not grozet gooseberry, but "coors summerfest kiwi-wheat beer", i’d no doubt savage it for any perceived weakness of intent or character. so here’s a beer that could very well suck, and still i’m prepared to bend over backwards --till i’m doing the limbo --to accept the historic integrity of this craft ale. with a threadbare head of toenail white -- one that soon fled the interview-- the brew fills a snifter with a very thin french fry yellow pour. the nose is, as feared, an aftershave-like melange of spicy wood tones and pear nectar fruits, with woodruff and bay rum. i don’t like it, and half of my apportioned slack is used up. upon an open-minded sip, i find a watery and a nearly dead-flat libation that announces a bit of watered down lemon juice and a honey-infused grain tincture-- a drink that if served warm would be a fine re-hydrating sore throat remedy (though i’d add a shot of bourbon for punch), lightly sweet with a lime peel bitter finish. now i’m looking at the empty space where all that slack once resided. the best i can say is that it’s inoffensive and-- given enough tongue chaffing thirst-- refreshing . plus, one can even imagine the delicate and medicinal myrtle and hedge bog-- or whatever the hell is in there-- growing hair or increasing memory. maybe that hope will psychologically help fill the void where the flavor and body should be-- and even the void in my wallet of the three bucks i paid for this beer.

Based on the appearance and aroma I didn’t think I’d like the taste. Appearance is light yellowish amber. Decent head, mostly lasting. Aroma somewhat metalicky and sour. Inital flavor is moderate to heavy sweet, light sweet finish. A little fruity, slight honey flavor. Finish is short to average. Body light to medium, medium carbonation. Pretty good.
