Gooseberry Wheat Ale
From the Gaelic "Groseid". Since at least the 16th century Scots monks and alewives brewed indigenous drinks from cereals, wild herbs and ripe fruits. Tibbie Shiels green Grozet was immortalised by such Scots literati as Sir Walter Scott, Jas Hogg. (The Ettrick shepherd) and Robert Burns whoconsidered it a most convivial drink.
Brewed with lager malt, wheat, bog myrtle, hops and meadowsweet then secondary fermented with ripe Scottish gooseberries.
A pale golden beer, with a refreshing fruit aroma, clean palate, fruity wheat flavour and crisp finish. Recommended with, light foods, pastas and salads.
Drink well chilled in a tall glass.

I tried this beer after purchasing a 4-pack of "Historic Scottish Ales" from one of my local LCBO outlets. The beer pours a transparent light gold colour with almost no head. The aroma is extremely fruity with the gooseberries dominating the aroma. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. The flavour is earthy, sour malts, and some hoippy bitterness in the finish.

Bottle: Bought a sample pack of the Heather Ales, the Grozet is flowery, sweet and light. Interesting.

330ml bottle from a Real Food Store in Edinburgh. Golden brown body under an one-finger, frothy white head. Discreet hints of berries and fruits to the nose. Taste of spiced berries. Short, bittersweet tail. Foamy in the mouth [hotel room at Caravel Guest House, 24.10.2008].

Fruity and hoppy in the nose.Yellow-golden coloured brew, with a small white head. Flavour has an hint of gooseberries, a weak taste of honey and bread, along with some crystal malts. Odd beer.

Pours a faintly hazy straw colour with next to no head. Smells like berries, not much else. Flavour has a little bit of wheat spiciness. There might be a bit of some berries in there, but it’s hard to say. There’s some hints of grassiness as it warms up. It’s a little thin and fairly dry and puckery. Carbonation is low, and not necessarily in a good way.

7/28/2007: Grozet Gooseberry & Wheat Ale is murky and the color of pear juice from canned pears. It is tart with some flavors of wheat malt and something fruity. I’m guessing that the fruitiness is the gooseberries, but it’s difficult to say since I’ve never had gooseberries before. This beer is highly carbonated and quite light on the palate. My advice to anybody thinking about trying this beer is to pass it up and try something else!
