"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Bottle shared by The_Captain at the last Devonshire tasting. Pours dark brown with a bit of lt. brown head. Both the smell and taste are dominated by bitter chocolate. Quite an interesting history lesson.

500ml bottle. Clear dark brown with a thick, fizzy beige head. Chocolatey nose, some light coffee and nuts. Flavor is more of the same, chocolate and walnut bitter, mild coffee, a bit roasty. Uh, seaweed? Where? Al I taste is a pretty damn good beer.

Pours an opaque chestnut colour with a thin, but sturdy tan head that fades to ring, leaving minimal lacing. The nose initially grabs you with a strong and distinct mocha-coffee aroma, and thats it. The flaovur adds much complexity, briniging about smokey, bacon flavours, some saltyness and some bitter hops. The palate is a bit thin for the flavour profile, but is softly carbonated and quaffable. Very nice.

Pours a dark nut brown color with a thing tan head that fades slowely and leaves some laceing along the sides of the glass. The nose is a nice rich moca miked with spice and coffee. the initial flavor is nice and rich in chocolate and bitter coffee with that finish of spice and vanilla. It almost tastes like it was aged in a oak barrel but the alcohol content is not that high which is a little dissapointing. Overall this is an awesome beer with nice robust flavors and does not resemble much of a traditional ale.

Poured dark with a nice head. Very smooth for a dark ale with a good malty flavor. The name is deceptive because the seaweed taste is very light.

500 ml, bbe Feb 2009. A hair shy of opaque black with a beautiful, creamy and lasting quarter-inch head. Aroma of charred wood, molasses, dry cocoa and cappuccino. Flavor is dark chocolate, spicy green hickory, charred wood, slight caramel and smoke. Medium-heavy body is extremely smooth, soft, slightly watery and dry.
