Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Bottle from a gift pack given to me for Christmas. Pours a solid black center with very dar mahogany edges and a large bubbly beige head. Aroma starts of pleasant enough with lots of roasted malts, chocolate that as it warms shows a lot of bitter dry chocolate aroma. Super thin body with hardly any carbonation, weak. Very light bitter chocolate malt flavor. I knew this beer started off to good to last, reminded me of a porter light.

Dark chocolate liquor nose. Medium thick head, Deep brown/black with a hint of red. Deep roasted coffee malt sweetness, nice subtle hop balance. Medium body, nice mouth feel, long, slightly smoky finish. Really tasty beer.

There is almost a grape aroma to it. Tastes similar to a stout with it’s bitter finish. This beer is quite delicious and I’m looking forward to the other three beers that came in this sampler.

Bottle, bought @ YNWA, Kolding.
Pours deep mahogany with a medium, creamy, off-white head. Aroma is softly roasted, light chocolate and a herbal touch. Light carbonation, okay mouthfeel. Flavour is lightly roasted, fine balance, nice chocolate. Quite stout-ish.

Black with a brown head. Sweet malty aroma and flavours of chocolate, spice and roasted malts. It ends on a salty note, so perhaps the seaweed it present there - otherwise I can’t detect it. A fine brew, nevertheless!

2008-04-15. Very dark brown body is nearly headless. Lightly alcoholic, earthy malt aroma. Similar flavour, malty sweet base with light earthy notes. Smooth fuller than average palate is very lightly carbonated. (3+) Pleasant, but a bit too mild overall for me. Bottle shared by Mabel

Bottle. Aroma of chocolate. Very dark brown color with a beige/tan head that flattened immediately. A bit thin with very mild carbonation. Flavor is something like a mild stout. It has dark roasted malt with some chocolate. Arguably coffee as well. Quite smooth. Finish is toasted malt bitter. Very good. Not sure about the seabreeze. Or the weed.
