"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Bottle. Pours very dark (much more than I expected) with a maple/chestnut like color. Maple, malty grain, nutty, cereal aroma that is enjoyable. The flavor is similar to the aroma with malty, grainy, cereal flavors with hints of molasses. There’s seaweed in here?? Medium semi-creamy body. Drinkable. There is nothing particularly wrong with this brew. It’s a novelty, though you would never know there was seaweed in there.

Bottle. Dark malt, a little bit of chocolate and coffee. Average creamy brown head, dark body. Moderate bitter start and finish, average duration. Medium body, dry and creamy texture, soft carbonation, light metallic finish. Not bad, but a strange aftertaste, maybe it’s the seaweed...

Bottle pours a very dark, near black color with a medium foamy tan head. Good lacing on the glass. Lots of chocolate in the aroma and some roasted malt. Very interesting flavor that includes coffee, and bittersweet chocolate with sort of a slightly sweet pipe tobacco aftertaste. Very smooth and creamy.

50cl bottle purchased at Willow Bend Liquors (FL). Pours a rich, dark brown to black with a one-finger tannish/white head. Nose: smells of rich, deep chocolate, malt with a faint sweet aroma. Flavor: Smooth coffee flavor, full-bodied, malty with a slightly sweet finish. Carbonated tanginess throughout.

330 ml bottle. Very dark, red brown body with a small brown head. Nice aroma, mostly dominated by spices and some malt. Flavor is rosted malty and spicy. A bit sweet and quite nice, a rather thin body is a bit on the negative side.

Dark reddish with a thin beige head. Pleasent, mild aroma of sweet, light roasted malt and spices. Flavor is sweet malty, fruity and a balanced bitterness. Medium body, quite nice. Dark

I liked this but i’m not in love with it. It pours dark with a nice head on it. Had a distinct taste - malty, slighly sour and salty. Very easy to drink and enjoy.

Not a bad ale at all. To me it’s somewhat like a thin porter with more floral and spicy notes. Pours a brownish hue with little head. Sometimes when I see this one I can’t help but pick it up.
