"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

this poured a whole lot darker than i expected... very dark brown with red highlights and a soft light tan head. aroma is full of smoke, malt, chocolate, earthiness and, if i think hard enough, fresh seaweed. the flavor has a definite earthy saltiness to it but i don’t taste the seaweed... there’s chocolate, malt and a sourness from smoke. light to medium bodied and texture. smokiness and acidity linger a bit in the aftertaste. i want more seaweed flavor!

Aroma is hot cocoa, and some roasted smoke ,some cremey caramel also present, Taste is completely different, dominated by an almost harsh type of bitterness, this must be the sea salt and bladderwack , reminds me of chicory, like coffee with unsweetened bitter chocolate in it, I was actyually getting use to that by the end of the glass. an aquired taste

Cask conditioned at the Royal Oak, Bath 21/2/08. Near black in colour with a reddish tinge and a slight tan head. Aroma of roasted malt. dark chocolate and the seaside. Flavour started with a touch of sweetness, before some bitter chocolate and a slightly salty, bitter finish. Very good.

from 99 bottles, federal way, washington. pour is dark with a little red tint, small creamy tan head, very nice lacing. smell is of malt, cocoa, some sweetness, and a little roastiness. taste is chocolate, roasted nuts, a little bitter, come creaminess to it also. overall a nice complex brew, well balanced, similar to a stout but with a interesting aftertaste and kick.

What a pleasant suprise. I had not expected something like this when I pulled the bottle from my shelf. I’ve had one or two of this brewers other ales and they were....well, let’s just say I wouldn’t get them again. But this...very nice. A best before date of May ’08. Pours out a dark chocolate brown, a nice one-finger cap with some nice staying power. Aroma is briney, slightly smokey, a touch of roast and some undefineable sweet malts. Flavors were fairly spot on with the nose. Salty, roasty, smokey, malty and somehow it all works. Easy to drink with a very clean finish.

The name and aroma lead you to expect a heavy scottish ale. Poured dark brown. Heavy malted scent. Very mild taste, well balanced mocha and maltiness. Slight bitterness, clean finish.

Bottle: Poured a real dark brown almost black color with a thin light brown head. Scent is of malt and chocolate. Slight bitter taste that easily goes away to leave almost zero aftertaste. A very pleasant brew.

From bottle : Pours very dark color with little to no head, but a little ring of foam around the glass. Big time roasted malt nose. Flavor is a little more watered down then i was expecting. Some malt flavor, with hints of roastedness, but on the tail end, all flavor just fades away to wateryville. I think i can taste a tad bit of seaweed type flavor, if i close my eyes and think about it real hard. Thin to medium body, with a watery palate. Have to admit i was expecting more, even from something named Seaweed Ale.
