"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Bottle: Poured a real dark brown almost black color with a thin light brown head. Scent is of malt and chocolate. Slight bitter taste that easily goes away to leave almost zero aftertaste. A very pleasant brew.

From bottle : Pours very dark color with little to no head, but a little ring of foam around the glass. Big time roasted malt nose. Flavor is a little more watered down then i was expecting. Some malt flavor, with hints of roastedness, but on the tail end, all flavor just fades away to wateryville. I think i can taste a tad bit of seaweed type flavor, if i close my eyes and think about it real hard. Thin to medium body, with a watery palate. Have to admit i was expecting more, even from something named Seaweed Ale.

Bottle. Pours dark with a nice head. Has a dark maltyness to it. Has some slight seaweed flavor, but not much. A nice dark ale.

Bottle from Cyn. Pours black with a tan head. The nose is malty and rich and has some chocolate in it as well. Taste is chocolaty and sweet and honestly much better than I expected, I’ve seen this around for years but never bought it. Its rich and light and drinkable nice.

Pours dark and looks like any other dark stout or black porter. Has the aroma of yer typical stout or porter also. Yes, some barely detectable seaweed or pleasantly fishy flavors in the taste but it is mostly dark alt or roasty porter in nature. Weird background hints of chocolate or chocolate malt. Stack this up against a more coarse american dark lager or a sweeter stout. Surprisingly creamy carbonation that has a creamy impact and fades rapidly once on the palate. Finish is mild and non obtrusive. An easy to like beer for a one timer. I appreciate the low alky content on this one. Not as tasty as East End Kvass but certainly better than most other traditional ales I’ve tasted including Yards spruce and Midas touch. A lttle better than Heather grozet. Overall, probably should be compared to and along side sweet stouts.

Pours a dark dark brown to black wit ha bit of a thin light light tan head. The nose is kind of flat. Kind of smells like a stout to me, to be honest! Dark chocolate and roast. Not really coffee or acidic. Soft roast. Perhaps a bit herbal. In the mouth, it’s about average. Low carbonation, not too thin or too viscous. Taste is what shines. Dark chocolate up front with subdued roast and light acidity. Tastes like a stout really. The finish is rather nice to be honest. Just rather fresh. Light lively acidity. Light sweetness up front, gives way to a roasted dryness. No coffee here. Not a bad beer, though I kind of wish this had more seaweed character.

"Kelpie..can’t helpie think its not an ale....but how I prevail, its color....my nose will now smother... in the aroma...its a good thing I don’t have pneumonia....or I wouldn’t detect the thin tracing of sushi lacing....caramel and fun, what has begun...I like it for an ale...and on this scale, it gives pleasure.....but nothing to make me flail....coffee and roasted, drink a case and you could get toasted"--(a J.Funk original)
