"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

I was so surprised by this beer. I was thinking Popeye’s can of spinach beer that was probably salty. This is a malty smooth ale with a chocolate shadow. I would share this one with anyone that is interested in trying new things.

Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma has a decent amount of chocolate, roasted malts, molasses, vanilla, and some dark fruit. A little thicker on the palate then I expected but still seemed slightly watery. Flavor doesn’t have as much chocolate as the aroma suggests. Overall this beer is alright.

i recall zeswaft had a rating where he said he was terrified to try a beer. that’s where i am with this. it pours way darker than i expected. almost a porter, but some red light shines through the bottom. pretty elegant, nice head. smells like a porter, too. lots of chocolate, a little roast. some vanilla. pretty good. tastes a bit muted, but i like it. if this was rebadged i think it would score a lot higher. it’s pretty much the same thing as lion stout. certainly isn’t bad.

I wasn’t really very impressed with this beer, but it wasn’t the salty noori/kelp taste I was anticipating. In fact, if you didn’t know that it was in there, you wouldn’t be able to discern its presence from the taste alone. Color was dark with a bit of head. Aroma is pretty plain. Flavor is not bad, and is some subtle roastiness. Mouthfeel is unremarkable. Recommended for novelty purposes only.

dark maroon with faint brown head. sour vegetable aroma. thin and crisp body. roasted tartness with a light spiciness that is definitely unique, kind of a weird soy sauce liquorice chocolate mixture. very light and a lager-like crispness.

Had this beer on 1/10/2006. Aroma is faint. Color is a deep brown with light carbonation and a thin head. Taste is a mild roasted malt flavor and a dry hop finish.
