Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Bottle. Pours an attractive dark brown with a thin light brown head. Aroma of lightly roasted malt, a whiff of smoke and wet hay. Some malt, milk chocolate and salt on the palate. A tad watery and thin. Inoffensive.

Odd, a tad salty as it should be. Many of the flavors in Heather Ales offerings are new to me. This is a dark, mild beer with little bitterness. Enjoyable.

Bottle. Sour milk malt aroma. Dark brown with a small head. Slightly sour milk, brown sugar and malt flavor - very much like a porter. Possibly a hint of saline in the finish. Seaweed in the name made me think there might be some characteristics like in Islay Scotch but it really didn’t but was still an enjoyable brew.

Cask handpull at Fat Cat, Norwich. Black, lasting beige head. That is an arresting beer. Liquorice stout aroma. Good condition, distinctive spicyness on finish. It’s a slightly sour, liquorice stout with a dry spicy finish. No real saltiness. Fine and definitely interesting.

A black beer. It has some smoke and even some peat, which I didn’t expect. No hop presence, and perhaps it doesn’t have any. Light smoke in the flavor with some pine. I don’t perceive any seaweed or any other ocean-related character, but this is a solid beer.

This is an interesting brew. Sampled at joebrew’s Friday evening beer tasting at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, MN. Pours a hazy dark brown brew with a light tan head that slowly dissolves to a fine film and good lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, smoky licorice, milk chocolate and a touch of salt. Taste is smooth, creamy, medium bodied, with slight chocolate aftertaste. Finish is smooth, creamy and then a lingering smoke aftertaste.
