"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Has a very interesting aroma - malty and also salty. (Well, it is made with seaweed!) Beautiful deep, nearly opaque brown with a thick, tan head. Flavor is superb - rich, malty, with some sea tang and a hint of molasses. The finish is a little watery, but overall this is a very pleasant ale, smooth and distinctive.

Rich porter base, roasty chocolate flavors. Slight metallic flavor in the finish. I don’t get the sea flavors, maybe a faint saltiness, but overall just tastes like a nice porter.

My girlfriend picked this out at Knightly Spirits simply because it piqued both of our curiosities. SoLan at KS said to expect a chocolatey taste. Didn’t get that as much as I expected, in fact I didn’t really enjoy this one much overall. The aroma was offputting, but I powered through it and downed a few sips. It was hard to finish. Not terrible, but not that great either.

500ml brown bottle from Ron’s in Farmington. Dark brown/black opaque body with a quarter inch of light tan head. Smells chocolatey more than anything. Tastes like roasty chocolate with kind of an odd flavor I can’t put my finger on with a bit of astringency. On the heavier side of medium-bodied. Tasty and complex, but not something I’d want everyday. Definitely glad I tried it though.

365 beers in 365 days! 2nd beer in an attempt to rate 365 beers over the next year! Monday May 21st 2007 500ml bottle from Martins Liquor Pours a dark brown cola color with a light beige head that quicky dissapates. Nose tingels with fine typical scottish malts. Mid-full flavor taste with a nutty brown ale hint at well as a chocolaty malt backbone. The flavor of seaweed escaped me, however dont think I ever had it to compare or notice it. Look for the next 363 beers and for the entire diary on my BeerMagnets website

I thought this was a decent beer. It poured light brown and had very light notes of anise oin the nose. The mouthfeel was heavier in chocolate and licorice but I did not really feel any seaweed. Not a bad beer.

22 oz Bottle. Pint glass. Black color with thin head that lasts. Roasted malt, sweet chocolate, and caramel taste with a very slight note of peat. No hops to speak of. Thin and mellow body with dry and spicy/peat finish.
