"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Bottle at The Rate at London Bridge (London), pours black with a light tan foamy head. A roasted malt aroma with bitter chocolate. A smooth palate at first that becomes refreshing and more malty and salty through the swallow. A good interesting and different beer.

Dark Dark brown with a little clinging head around the edges. Burnt chocolate on the nose. Burnt coffee and smoke in the body with a splash of salty sea water at the end.

Very dark brown. Dark chocolate malt aroma. Pleasant liquorice and coffee taste, some ash and a mid bitter finish. No sign of the seaweed, thank goodness. I very much doubt there’s much ’traditional’ about this. But it’s quite good.

Black/brown with a nougat head, that disappears rather quickly. The aroma has notes of chocolate and the mouthfeel is medium oily. The flavour has notes of chocolate, hints of smoke, and the body is fairly light. But then again, it’s no porter, I find it hard to remember this... The finish has a light bitterness. Hmmm too little in this bottle, I like it...

Pours brown with some sparse carbonation. Smells of soy, peat moss, chocolate and nutty. Tastes of bitter chocolate and some unusual vegetal hints with a nice sweet malt background. Mouthfeel is thick. finish is sweet.

Brown color with a tan head. Chocolate, malty aroma. Smokey chocolate flavor. Good beer. Seaweed seems to be a marketing play here.

Bottle (from Bitter Virtue, BB Mar 08). Chocolatey roast and malt in the aroma. Slightly sweet in the mouth with some saltiness in the finish. Other than the saltiness which isnt out of place here the seaweed wasnt really noticeable.
