"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Poured a black hue with brown hints. Nose is pure chocolate. Mouthfeel is thinnish, with lotas of stout overtones coming through. A nice easy drinking beer. Don’t get much seawed though. Haha. Having lived in Japan for a few years i know what it smells and tastes like!

Pours very dark almost black chestnut brown color with mahogany edges when held to a light source and a 1.5 finger frothy tan head that quickly fades into a lasting ring. Minimal lacing. Roasted chocolate aroma with some roasted malt, coffee, toffee, grape juice and sea salt. Roasted malt flavor with hints of chocolate, roasted coffee and salty ocean water. I was afraid that the seaweed would be overly dominate but in fact it is a nice compliment to the other flavors and not overpowering at all. Hints of oatmeal and toffee accompany the roasted chocolate malty flavor. Creamy and smooth up front with sweet chocolate center and a salty, spicy vegetable presence in the dry hoppy finish.

From the bottle this poured deep chocolate brown with burgundy tones, fluffy tan head that lasted about a minute. I smell chocolate first of all, and then seaweed, I guess, almost like spinach. It smells earthy and green. It tastes just a bit sour like a brown ale, a touch sweet with nice toasted bitterness. And then a slight residule kelpiness, really, like nori. The palate is a bit thin, but it’s also past best by date by a month. Expand your horizons and try some seaweed beer!

Sample at Brewnosers’ meeting April 2008. Brown colour with a fully diminishing off-white head. Chocolate, molasses, and earthy hop aroma. Lighter molasses flavour with a dry and light body belying its initial aroma. Not bad but punches below its weight beyond the aroma.

Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Very nice malty, earthy aroma. Yes I do believe I can smell the ocean. Flavor is rich with chocolate and malts. Velvet like feel and nicely dry. Good stuff.

Bottle from Cracked Kettle. Dark brown body with slight translucence and rocky head. Nose of roasted malts and chocolate. Malty and watery taste with slight chocolate. Similar to a porter. Can’t taste much seaweed though. A bit tart but only ever so slightly.
