Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Bottle (from Bitter Virtue, BB Mar 08). Chocolatey roast and malt in the aroma. Slightly sweet in the mouth with some saltiness in the finish. Other than the saltiness which isnt out of place here the seaweed wasnt really noticeable.

12 oz bottle. Best before 8-06. Clear brown with an active, but quick settling, mocha head. Coffee with faint licorice candy. Taste is stale coffee and watery bourbon stout. Finishes with light touches of radish, spinach, molasses and soy. Soft carb, thinnish body.

Bottle. Dark red-brown colour. Aroma of good roasty malt and chocolate. Flavour is soft and smooth, sweet with a nice roasty maltiness and chocolate. Dry roasty finish. Tastes more like a porter than an ale.

Bottle. Deep brown, clear beer with a beige head. Roasted, coffee-like aroma with a weak fruityness. The flavor is a bit weak, with roasted malt and hints of fruityness. A bit thin body. A surprise from Heather Ales, nice aroma but a bit boring flavor. Rating: 6-4-6-3-12-3.1. (070216)

Bottle. It pours an almost headless, unclear, dark brown body. Just a few beige bubbles round the rim. Roasted, coffeeish nose with some dried fruits. A little sour touch too. Almost powdery in the mouth, medium body-fullness. Roasted, coffeeish flavor with some chocolate and a fruity hint. Not much bitterness found, but some roasted bitterness is present. The finish is more on the chocolate side than on the coffee side. Quite nice, but a bit ordinary. (090525)

Pours a dark brown with a medium tan head. Nice sweet chocolate, raisen, and dark fruit nose. The flavor is nice and toasty with a great bittersweet chocolate, a little grassiness, and some coffee as well. A little watery, but quite tasty.

330ml bottle sampled with Magne and CinnamonGirl at The Rake in London. Very inviting with a rustic brown body under a tan head. Burnt, peaty smell. Dark malty texture with hints of both chocolate sweetness and salty grass. Sophisticated! (01.02.2007).

Bottle. Pours dark brown, with a tan frothy head, some lace. Aroma of malt and botanicals (coriander?) and chocolate / espresso. Mouth is malty and chocolatey, some salt. Lasts well in the palate and is balanced and easy to drink. Rather nice.

16.9oz bottle. pours with a minimal bubbly head w/a tan tint and no sustain. ruby brown hue to the beer. aromas of tart and sour fruits, and only mild hints of hop and malts; more yeasty than anything. tastes a bit like newcastle, but with a little bit of flavor. i noticed a touch of salt, and - as the beer warmed, there was a mild hop character as well. smoother finish, but a naked palate. it’s taste is a bit oceanic, but there isn’t much else there. still feels and tastes a little thin.
