Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Poured a deep black with a whispy whtie head, much like a porter. Had a salty, sea like smell, almost scotch whiskey like with just a hint of whiskey like fruit. Flavor has more roasted malt than I anticipated. Chocolate, grainy, malty, very nutty flavor. Finish is slightly oily and the nutty flavor stays on the palate.

500 mL bottle. Pours a nearly opaque dark ruby with big beige head. The aroma is quite malty with caramel and toffee notes, as well as a slight botanical hint. The flavor is impressively roasty, with toasty malt. And, surprisingly, I am able to taste the seaweed. Maybe it’s just because I know it’s there. It’s like a really mellow salty plant tone. Somehow it seems to fit well with the other flavors. The finish is slightly nutty. Pretty weird, but I think I actually like it.

Actually a silky, jet-black sweetly malty stout with some very mellow roasted bitterness. Only a hint of brine in the nose evokes anything seaweedy. Develops some smokiness as it warms. Lovely foody milky palate. Nothing like the hideous novelty I was hoping for.

Didn’t know what I was expecting with this, surprisingly I got a very good at what it is. The body is a very thin through out the entire beer and there a notice array of chocolate, the seaweed that they mention is very mild and subtle. still, I am quite surprised
