Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Dark brown, moderate tan head that rapidly recedes. Aromas of brown bread and chocolate. Predominant flavour is chocolate, but there is an underlying mineral quality as well. Low carbonation lends a smooth mouthfeel, and despite its low alcohol content, it does not lack in robustness of flavour. I agree with several other recent raters that this is very porter-like, and has no notable seaweed element anywhere-- nothing vegetal, not especially salty, and no "low tide" character (thankfully!). Very good, and a cool piece of brewing heritage to boot.

Bottle from Party Source. Poured black color with an average frothy white head that was mostly lasting with fair lacing. Moderate toasted sweet malty aroma. Medium body with a slick texture. Medium sweet toasted flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Drinkable beer.

Bottle from Spirit Haus in Amherst. Not as kelpy as I had thought/hoped, but maybe that’s a good thing. Pours dark and tastes as malty as it looks, comes across very much like a porter with some heavily roasted notes, some sweet chocolate/caramel, and a few other flavors common to a porter. The body is fairly light. Like other raters noted, however, it is highly salty, especially in the finish. Maybe the connection is mental, but it certainly gives me a seabreeze vibe. It’s a good beer, but it’s main value comes as a novelty. Still, it’s a novelty worth trying.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & tupalev -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a spare diminishing off-white head. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malt, kind of buttery with brown sugar and caramel -- very nice. Flavour of caramel malt, some roastness, dark fruit and chocolate -- almost Porter-like. Light to medium bodied -- it’s a tad thin. Pretty good, like the other Heather Ales from this brewery.

Bottle shared with GregClow, Hogtown Harry, and Blankboy, Harry’s bottle. Thanks Harry, I’ve been eager to try the last of the 5 Heather Ales (well, I’ve tried it before, but that was back pre-ratebeer and now it doesn’t come in that giftpack any more). Deep dark brown, small murky bubbly white head. Wonderful dark malt, chocolate aroma - earthy. Rich dark porter taste. Very chocolaty and roasty, nice linger. A little watery. A really nice old style porter, no hint of seaweed!

Smokey dark malt nose with salt spray and iodine like an Islay single malt, or is that my imagination? Opaque black body with a small tan head thtat vanishes, leaving adequate lacing. Smokey dark malt taste, salt and iodine overtones, tannic, with a moderately bitter finish.

Bottle at Sicosis: Pours a very dark and muddy brown color. Head is medium, light brown and stable. It shows good retention and leaves a decent lacing. Aroma is malty with soft chocolate and coffee notes. There’s a big grainy backbone of toasted grains. Some wet wood and a little of herbal notes of moss and maybe seaweed (?). Flavor is like a muted stout. Very smooth, it tends to the sweeter side with soft touches of burnt coffee and toasted barley grains. Finish is nicely roasted. This beer feels incredibly smooth on the palate. Lightly creamy texture, low carbonation. Medium bodied, it finishes dry. A good beer but rather shy.

Bottle shared with blankboy, tupalev & HogTownHarry - HogTownHarry’s bottle. Deep ruby-brown - almost black - with a small head. Aroma of chocolate, roast malt, smoke and peat. Flavour is mellow and roasty with some sweet and earthy notes. Nice to finally try the last of the five Heather ales.
