Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Bottle shared with blankboy, tupalev & HogTownHarry - HogTownHarry’s bottle. Deep ruby-brown - almost black - with a small head. Aroma of chocolate, roast malt, smoke and peat. Flavour is mellow and roasty with some sweet and earthy notes. Nice to finally try the last of the five Heather ales.

Bottled. Black/ruby red colour, small brownish head. Aroma is roasted malts, spices and coffee. Flavour is roasted malts, hops and coffee. Also some vegetably and salty notes. Maybe the latter ones are from the seaweed?

Bottled (BB 10/2007). Dark ruby color, small tan head. Smoked, brown sugar, coffeish aroma. A bit watery, roasted balanced malty, long roasted coffeish aftertaste. "Seaweed" is quite misleading, more like drinkable porter it is.

Had this one bottled (Thanks Arnie!) Dark brown, opaque pour, with a slightly sweet maltiness in the nose and not much else, thick creamy mouthfeel, slightly smoky but not much going on in the taste, finishes clean but I didn’t get much out of this one.

Looks exactly like a Coca Cola! Or maybe a Pepsi ;-) Smoked aroma and smoked and malty flavor and I don’t like it....

Bottle (500ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow andI tupalev, my bottle. Deep clear mahogany, small head. Sweet roast malt aroma, brown sugar, caramelized, bitter burnt finish - nice. Decent body, sticky and lightly carbonated - very pleasant, nice and roasty.

Not bad. Very unique. Seaweed does give it a nautical twist, a bit like an Islay scotch. Fun to give to you friends and have them guess the secret ingredient.

Dark, purplish-brown pour, nearly an opague red. Thick, with hints of coffee and malts on the nose. Smooth, bock-like favor, thick and rich.
