Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Pours deep mahogany into an English pint. Micro head quickly subsides to skim rim. Deep malt and dried fruit aromas. Flat with smoked caramel front to back. Dry lingering caramel finish turns bitter. Very much like a dry stout.

Something about this beer just had me hooked from the get go. Quite possibly it was the fact I didn’t really expect much of it, but then the world’s full of surprises. From the bottle into a flute, cool but not cold. Bright, shimmering, deep cola brown body with a sadly short-lived, frothy tan head. Leathery, smoky and generously peaty aroma with trails of burnt toast, toffee and seaweed, and a similar underpinning of fresh sea air I noticed also in the Ebulum. Smoky, dry, dominantly peaty malts in the mouth showing just a hint of bitter/sweet, tangy berry fruits and burnt wood. Seaweed pokes its head out, salty and textured, but this is overpowered by the lovely depth of malt that reminds me of the Single malts of the Isle of Islay (Caol Ila, perhaps!?!). Body is quite full, smooth and soft and it finishes off long, smoky and creamy down the back. Nicely balanced, wonderfully made and modest in strength, but not in flavour. Very nice!!! Bottle: Clear dark, dark brown with a tan head. I wasn’t expecting this to be so dark. I guess I was thinking some ocean colors might be present. Anyway, it has an interesting oceanic aroma (???) along with mint chocolate and an elcetric burner warming up. The taste is loaded with charcoal. Where is the seaweed flavor? It has a thin body which provides an aftertaste that quickly dissipates. Overall, a pretty rich brew. I liked it.

Jet black with a creamy light brown head. Roasty malt in the nose. Malty body with a little sweetness, chocolate and licorice. Nice clean finish.

Smells of chocolate and malt (no seaweed :-P) Taste is very smooth and velvety, but the finish is watery and does not back up the initial taste. I detected some chocolate, molasses, and some mild smokiness. Definitely an enjoyable and different beer.
