"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Out of a bottle, bomc. So I read the bottle and was expecting god knows what? I was surprised with what I found. Aroma of bitter chocolate and coffee, dark roasted malts. Poured a black coffee colore with a thin creamy tan head. Taste was definitely unique, the aforementioned but with a tinge saltiness. Palate was good, thin and watery just enough texture though. Overall a different experience that more should have.

I was pleasenly surprised by this beer, I had seen it at the stores and always pondered purchasing one but never did. Then low and behold it came in my beer of the month club package this month. Nose of chocolate and malts. Pours quite dark brown, with little to no head. Flavor even more malty, with a nice chocolate undertone resembling a chocolate soda almost.

Dark brown color. Some malt, loads of caramel, a bit thin mouthfeel, quite boring.

Very dark brown. Chocolate aroma. Malty and quite sweet initially. Developes to a more roasted malt and chocolate taste. Dry aftertaste with a salty hint.

This beer smells a little like kelp, fortuantely, there’s not kelp in it. This was a flavorful beer, a little sweet. Not one that will be my favorite.

Looks like a porter and has a sweet, nutmeg-chocolate aroma; low carbonation and diminishing head; mild, roasted, bittersweet cocoa flavor over a smooth, slightly salty palate, finishes a tad dry; where’s the seaweed?

Forth Brewery has a way of making something great out of something one would think to be atrocious. The bottom line is that seaweed does not dominate this drink but rather is subliminalized to provide a unique flavor to the beverage. Chocolate elements are even more strongly present and lead to an excellent malty finish -- with just the right touch of maritime element.
