"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

[At Københavnske Øldage 2005] A red-brown beer with no head. The aroma is sweet and slightly spicy. The flavor is quite roasted and malty with hints of chocolate and with a dry end. I can’t tell the seaweed, but I like the spicyness and roastyness.

Poured from the bottle the beer is a nice dark brown, almost verging on black, smallish bubbly tan head, good lacing down my glass. Fine chocolaty/salty aroma, coffeeish. taste is rather odd..its mostly of dark but with an odd salty tinge underneath..maybe from the seaweed, I am not sure, but the salty thing make for a short dry finish. quite deceptivlly carbonated and light in the mouthfeel department, but for me this works quite well. I found this an odd beer, but I liked it and found it very drinkable.

I was bracing for another unpleasant experience after sampling a few of the other Historic Ales of Scotland, but this unique brew is actually pretty good. Dark brown with lots of swirling red highlites supporting a fair-sized khaki head. Aroma of roasted malt, toffee (which I didn’t expect), raisins, hops and - yes - sea salt. Surprisingly well-balanced flavors which were almost porter-like with roasted malt, chocolate, brown sugar and a hint of spice. Hops bring up the rear quite nicely and give this ale a crisp finish. If not for the odd use of seaweed, I’d say this was a fair but thin porter or "pale porter". Really nothing odd about the flavor - this is worth picking up if you see it.

500 ml bottle. Pitch-black cola-textured body, large diminishing tan fine-bubbled head...roasty, sweet dark-chocolate aroma, touches of vanilla, somewhat low-impact but inviting...body very, very smooth with just a trace of prickly carbonation to keep the milkiness from cloying...moderately sweet, light chocolaty body with a touch of citrusy acid (is that the seaweed?)...very pleasant, easy-drinking, delightful beer, nothing overpoweringly great but right now I’d like another.

(Bottle 33 cl) Very dark, almost black. Presumably it’s filtered but pretty much without head. Low in carbonation. Quite smoked flavours - almost burned. But a rather light body. Very aromatic and lovely beer. Not sure if I can taste the added kelp though... 230904
