Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

(Bottle 33 cl) Very dark, almost black. Presumably it’s filtered but pretty much without head. Low in carbonation. Quite smoked flavours - almost burned. But a rather light body. Very aromatic and lovely beer. Not sure if I can taste the added kelp though... 230904

Poured dark brown with a good head and lacing. Aroma and flavor of roasty malt, chocolate and coffee. Body is a bit watery. Last of the 4 bottle gift pack.

1pt 0.9oz bottle, black to red, 2" dirty head, black licorice malt nose, take some flat carbonated water add some burnt wood, ash a cigarette in it and spill a little yager in it and you’ve got some kelpie, the taste was very different than what im used to but by the end i kinda wanted another.

Thin watery black with very little head. Aroma is not all that bad, light chocolate, smoke and coffee. The flavor definately is unique due to the seaweed, a little bit of a turn-off. Middle of the road.

Black with a tan head. Medium sweet nose, touch of smoke, light metallic notes, some carob. Flavor is fairly sweet, somewhat smokey, with a nice bitter, dry kick.Creamy mouthfeel.

Dark brown with a medium sized head. Aroma of a chocholate malt and tastes like a watered down Youngs Double chocholate. Leaves you with a clean palate.

It has a nice smoky aroma and dark color. I enjoyed its subtle chocolate flavors.

Dark coffee brown. Little to no carbonation. Thin, off-white head with little lacing. Smells sweet - a bit chocolatey, some honey, a little malt. Oily around the mouth with a slick, watery finish. Medium-bodied. Goes down very smooth, but the palate could use a little something to better round everything out. Perhaps a nice, crisp hoppy kick. Extremely drinkable though. Others have noted a flavor slightly "off" that they couldn’t quite put the finger on and I agree. Not necessarily bad, but the whole offering seems unbalanced. Would probably buy again though.
