"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

In terms of the seaweed infusion I was expecting, this proved a little gimmicky, but this did vaguely invoke small port towns and sea breezes for me! probably more to do with the clean, fresh taste. Also wasn’t expecting something akin to a sweet porter or brown ale, but that’s closer to what you get. Peat, roasted malt-coffee aromas and expected colour. Notable earthy tones and a balanced bitterness. Disappointingly watery though.

Pours a large head. Tastes of chocolate in the malt, plus something else, not quite describable, or at least new, probably the seaweed then.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown with a light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts with a slight hint of chocolate. Flavor matches the nose. A very smooth beer that shouldn’t need the seaweed labeling to be as as up front as it is, there is no taste or smell of seaweed or salt. Definately a decent beer.

Best before Jan 2010, bomber had here in early March 2009. Big roast malt nose, some yeast, and maybe lactose? Dark brown pour nearing black, light brown head is creamy and luscious. Light, watery body is full of flavor, a roasty, ash-sprinkled stout with some mellow mocha and again, possible lactose. Sweet and smooth. Not picking up seaweed or even a really salty component, but it’s a nice little mellow session regardless of its algae content.

A clear dark brown colored beer, with a small thick foamy head. The aroma of chocolade and butterscotch, sweet with some roasted coffee. The taste of chocolate, a little smoked malt, coffee, some sweet, nice bitter and nuts. The aftertaste is bittersweet with some chocolate.

Grabbed a bottle of this at a great little sushi bar in downtown Knoxville after the tronraner Xmas Eve^3 gathering. Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. Roasty aroma and flavor with a soft mouthfeel. Kinda reminded me of a milk stout. Very enjoyable.
