Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

On cask. Ruby coloured brew with a fine, off-white head. Brown sugar malt and a hint of toasted barley. Flavour is fairly sweet, brown sugar, crystal malt, and a bit of a briny finish.

Looks and tastes much like your traditioanal dry stout only with a bit more black patent and roasted malts. Taste suffers a bit from a buttery diacetyl flavor as most all of historic ales beers seem to, I cannot say that it’s not to style because, well... how many other seaweed beers have I had before? Didn’t really notice much of a "true" seaweed taste though although I bet it would go great with some spicy tuna hand rolls.

Looks like a stout. Deep and dark with a beige head that disappeared quickly. Coffee, chocolate and smoky, roasted maltiness aroma but very light on all. Nice light coffee and chocolate flavors, smoky, and a tad salty. Thin mouthfeel but satisfying. Had it a little warm to draw out the flavors. Nice brew.

Aroma is sweet smelling, pours dark. An interesting brew. The underlying tastes made me think of those japanese sea weed snacks. Chcolate and coffee tastes are the primary flavors. A good ale.

Black with a small head. Aroma is smoky with licorice and cocoa. The smoke is there in the flavor as well ,together with cocoa and coffee. Quite a malty finish.

Bottle Pours black witha light tan head and nice lacing. I expect strong aroma form something so stout-looking, but though there are the dark malt and roasted, coffee and chocolate, they are mild, mellow and faint. Flavors are of coffee and charcoal and a little sour something. Seaweed? Bitter but in a good way, smokey aftertaste and a sort of thin feel. Not bad.

Smells like chocolate and slightly like coffee and as it was pouring I smelled the seaweed. After that it has a nice sea smell to it. Pours black with light brown head that goes down quick. You taste the chocolate upfront then taste more of the seaweed in the back. It isn’t all that bad really, not that overpowering. It has a slightly strange aftertaste but it didn’t last long. I am surprised that seaweed could taste so good, overall not bad at all.
