Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Dark Black Coloring. Small Head. Had in Fort William, Scotland and Have Tried Here. Definitly Better On Tap. Had More Chocolate Tones on Tap. Some Coffee. Very Tasty!

Bottled. Almost black. A burnt aroma. Rather salt with some late sweetness. Burnt flavour with coffee and chocolate.

Probably, the most “usual” from Historic ales, but, nevertheless, original and unforgettable. Dark, roasty and sweetish, like a weak porter, with nice salty caramelly aftertaste.

(on bottle)"A traditional ale"? Excuse me, but aint nothing traditional about seaweeds in my beer. This is probaly the beer with the most fullness to it, I´ve ever had, considering the mere 4,4%. Pitchblack with a green-brown shade. It has loads og liqurice in the nose and mouth, but mixed with any food, there apeares some herb-notes witch I only can discrbe as "seaweed". Fresh, minimal hoppy ending makes me take another sip.

Bottled. I had no idea what to expect with this one... Was it going to be like drinking a sushi plate or what? Well, I am pleasantly surprised with how good this tastes (and how little the seaweed comes into play, evidently). This little beauty is a mild chocolate offering that can either be savored slowly or, perhaps, as a session beer. It’s that versatile. I recommend this one, if for nothing other than you can say you drank seaweed. What a world!

Very dark, amber brown, almost night like with little or no head. Charcoal, burnt sugar, salt air. Molasses, with sour aromas. Soft mouthfeel, light on the palate, water like feel with little carbonation. Toast, light salt liquorice and an earthy greeness...Fun beer, very enjoable.

Dark brown brew with a light tan head. Some roasty aromas, some chocolate too. The flavor is slightly bitter, not quite a Porter, but not a Brown Ale either. Not bad, but I failed to detect anything that would indicate any flavor or aroma coming from the seaweed.
