Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Flat looking porter like appearance with a dense wheat like aroma and a dry floury flavour. Overall quite a flat and disappointing beer.

Bottled @ DBF2004: Dark brown coloured. Beige lasting head. Coffee, roastyness and chocolate in the aroma. Coffee and cocoa in the flavour. Nice bitterness in the end, that has an edge of seaweed to it. Nice one.

Dark brown almost black in color. Roasted coffee overtones with choclate undertones. Not really bitter at all, but still enjoyable. When it warms the seaweed flavor can be found in the after taste.

very dark brown colour with a nice slightly brown tainted head, roasted coffeish and herbal aroma, smooth and rather light-bodied, the finish is dry, earthy and moderately bitter - balanced and interesting

Dark brown color. Medium tan head. Aroma is choclately. A medium bodied traditional ale. Malts are roasty and choclately. No hop flavors, they are there (I guess) but are very mild. Mostly it malt and musk. Very smooth tasting. There is seaweed added to the mash tun, but if its there I can’t taste any. Taste is more like a robust porter or stout. Nice clean dry finish. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is slightly sweet with a touch of bitter aftertaste after the aftertaste.

Just about black in color, huge tan head with nice lacing, some hints of chocolate in the nose, a bit thin in the mouthfeel, faint chocolate in the flavors & finish as well, also a bit thin there, didn't get that aroma of fresh seabreeze that I was promised, I was kinda looking forward to that & was let down a bit, not like you can get a beer to smell like the shore anyway, but still, it was false advertising

Bottle. Not as bad as I thought it would be. Just goes to prove, don't let the name fool you as I was anticipating not liking this one even before it was opened. It poured a medium sized tan head that was creamy and contained fine-small sized bubbles that mostly diminished. The body was mostly opaque with very little carbonation detected and the hue was dark brown. The aroma of this beer was malty, sweet and chocolate. The flavor was malty, caramel and chocolate flavors. The mouthfeel was smooth and the lacing was fair. Worth a try.
