"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Pours very dark and rich in color, with a sweet, chocolatey aroma mixed with a slight off kilter plant smell. Taste is similar, sharp with the seaweed at first, but then warms into the chocolate and roasted flavors.

2003 bottle. Pours a very thick dark brown/black with some light porter-like reddish tinges. Huge caramel colored head that lasts, lots of lacing. Aroma of light coffee, some dry toffee, salt water. Flavor begins muted, but then slowly builds up some caramel malt and even more chocolate malt. Palate is smooth and even, no real poignant notes or ups and downs, just a nice fairly creamy roasted malt ride with some light bitterness. Medium body and one of the best aftertastes I’ve experienced; dry but rich coffee beans. Tremendous stuff. Maybe could stand a bit more of a body.

Tasty rich chocolately undertones pervade this rich ale. Predominantly in the aftertaste, the nose if full of dark fruits and the taste is mostly plums and raisins, with some caramel to round the sweet side, with some earthy peaty bog like notes also in the flavor. Very rich and creamy, highly enjoyable, with a sweet spiced rum finish.

Inky brown/black with an almost nitrous mocha head. Rich aromas of dark malts, gourmet coffee, and Myers dark rum. Malty and roasty flavor evolves into a fruity tarness and an unattractive powdered milk taste. Decently full body, a tad oily. Aftertaste of strong diner coffee, Yoohoo, and aluminum. Overall, falls between pretty good and just ok.

Looks like the run-o-the-mill stout, and has a slightly salty malt aroma. Flavor is quite interesting. Definately more of a stout that what I expected from a traditional ale (granted, I've had only 2 others.) As for stout characteristics, its fantastic. More of a dry stout, with a fantastic palate; good mouthfeel at the beginning, more of an oily feel, then slides into a crisp finish that ends with a good chalky feel on the tongue. What a nice suprise from a seaweed brew.

Saw the label and a friend convinced me to try this. What a pleasure. Very dark with some ruby coloring. A small white head with little lacing. Coffee and malt in the aroma. The flavor is full bodied with some ash, and roasted coffee. Similiar to a strong porter. Slight apple towards the end of a glass. This is interesting and I would try this again. The seaweed got me to try this and I don't regret it.

Dark black color with very little head and none to light lacing. The aroma has some chocolate and spicy hop notes, livens up after it warms up a bit; very rich. The flavor has lots of roasted chocolate notes with a finish of kombu & bonito, very light dashi. Finishes like a nice balanced chocolate with some coffee roasted into the background. The seaweed is detectable and so deliciously blended into this fine ale. Another winner from Heather, I find this to be the best!

Black hue with a decent light brown head. Roasted malt aroma. Roasted, toasted taste with coffee and chocolate tones. Tastes like a porter. A good beer.
