"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

A clear dark brown colored beer, with a small thick foamy head. The aroma of chocolade and butterscotch, sweet with some roasted coffee. The taste of chocolate, a little smoked malt, coffee, some sweet, nice bitter and nuts. The aftertaste is bittersweet with some chocolate.

Grabbed a bottle of this at a great little sushi bar in downtown Knoxville after the tronraner Xmas Eve^3 gathering. Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. Roasty aroma and flavor with a soft mouthfeel. Kinda reminded me of a milk stout. Very enjoyable.

best by 9/09 Dark brown with hints of ruby at the edges and a light tan thin head. Aroma is thin chocolate, light peat and salty iodine. Taste is thing but more chocolate, lightly vegetal and earthy bitterness.

20090110 50cl bottle from RB Spirits, bbf Feb 2009. Dark brown, opaque, with small, lasting, oddly pale beige head that seems lighter than it should with such a dark beer. Aroma is full of chocolate, molasses, peat-like earthiness, cardboard. Full body with light eff. Flavors are full and milk chocolaty. Really not what I expected. Plenty of earthy notes, light mineral, chalky and dry. The finish is very dry, dusty, quick, with lingering light vegetal notes. Nothing at all briny or, uh, kelpie. Despite my hesitation for many years to buy and sample this brew, it is actually quite pleasant, much like a decent, earthy, sessionable porter. Go figure.

Pours a deep brown color with a small off-white head. Caramel malts dominate here but there are some light molasses and sugar notes that also play a role. Definitely predominately sweet. Starts out bitter and a bit biting on the tongue. Through the middle anf finish it gains it’s sweetness back and again becomes caramel and possibly a bit of dark plum fruitiness. Does not linger long and finishes dry. Not much by the way of seaweed although there is some definite floral earthiness to it. Medium body and moderate-high carbonation. Not particularly weird despite the name and description but still a solid beer.

This is disgusting. Black pour with a medium off white head. Am I drinking a nice delicious dry stout? Nope its salt ale! Nose is salt and mildew and a faint hint of chocolate malt. Taste is like old chocolate, watery garbage, and salt. Why is this even made?

11.2 oz bottlle Barely able to see through this. Its better as it warms. Honestly I dont smell or taste the seaweed too much, instead there are the chocolate malts and coffee which was a nice surprise. Feels a bit like a porter. Not bad
