"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Black pour with a pale, foamy head. Good-looking modern label. Mellow, hoppy aroma with something unusual in it, like fresh fruit or heather. Light-bodied and mildly carbonated, with a fresh, dry flavor. I don’t really taste (or smell) much seaweeed, but I do detect spicy hops, light grains, and a touch of salty ocean breezes. However, this is not an irritating, experimental brew - it is very easy to drink and enjoy.

Bit of a dismal head on a fairly dark brown body. Some chocolate in the taste with a bit of what seems to be seaweed on the aftertaste or is it more like a peaty malt taste. Some roasted malts in the aroma though only soft.

This beer is a bit earthy and light in flavor. It has an aroma of a brown ale, it seemed a bit nutty. Good flavor with a brown ale similarity, but slightly bitter in the finish.

[1295-20080415] 1pt0.9floz bottle. Grainy roasted malt aroma. Clear, dark amber brown body with quick off-white bubbles. Grainy fish cakes flavour has an alcoholic finish and malty mid-tones. Medium body. The elusive kelpie need not be sought after all, though she be a fair catch in the drink.

Bottled. Pours a dark amber color with a medium thick beige head. The aroma is light roasted malts, earthy, something I can only assume is seaweed, and grass. The flavor has moderately sweet malt, lite chocolate, fruit, and grass. Medium bodied and on the interesting side. I won’t revisit this.

Very dark brown pour with thin tan head. Aroma of chocolate roasted malt. Taste has more roasted malt, chocolate, and mildly bitter chocolate. To be honest I can’t taste any of the seaweed except perhaps in some saltiness in the finish. Good carbonation but slightly watery mouthfeel on the finish.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown/black. Aroma is kinda sweet, kinda earthy. A little chocolate. Maybe a little veggie/saltiness, but then again, I’m looking for a seaweed flavor.
