"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

Appearance: Dark, redish brown. Little bit of head. Aroma: Malty. Can actually smell the seaweed. Taste: Malty. Something weird about it. Tangy. Info: 500ml bottle, 20/4-2006, 105/300

Bottle sampled at Alan’s HSC initiation: This has to be the most unappetizing description for anything in a bottle. I mean, you had me at "bladder rack" seriously?! I was pleasantly surprised by this, maybe that is why they try to psych you out by the label. ANYWAY. Pours a very dark brown with a thick off-white head. Aroma is very sweet chocolate and chocolate malts. Some raw sugar. Flavor is earthy, some light coffee flavors, but a medium-bodied brew throughout. Would not buy again, but would drink again.

(Scotland) Courtesy of the Capt, Dark brown color with a med-tan head. The aroma is of chocolate notes and molasses. There is a coffee / bitter malt taste, not bad!!! The finish is dry.

Set of four sample pack shared with the Knights. Poured dark brown with small head. Bitter malts and chocolate mix moves from the nose to the pallet. This was rather an odd concoction and a little chalky and coco bitterness. Dry finish.

Bottle shared by The_Captain at the last Devonshire tasting. Pours dark brown with a bit of lt. brown head. Both the smell and taste are dominated by bitter chocolate. Quite an interesting history lesson.

500ml bottle. Clear dark brown with a thick, fizzy beige head. Chocolatey nose, some light coffee and nuts. Flavor is more of the same, chocolate and walnut bitter, mild coffee, a bit roasty. Uh, seaweed? Where? Al I taste is a pretty damn good beer.
