Commercial Description:
Bottled. A cask version is available from May to July.
"Seaweed Ale"
Prior to the 1850's there were many Scottish coastal alehouses which brewed their own ales, these ales were made from local malted barley which was grown on fields fertilised with seaweed. This environment gave the barley a very specific flavour which we have recreated by the inclusion of fresh seaweed in the mash tun. In addition to the seaweed (bladder rack) harvested on the Argyll coast we have used only organically grown malt - the darker malts roasted by ourselves.
Kelpie is a rich chocolate ale which has an aroma of fresh seabreeze and a distinctive malty texture.
Drink lightly chilled in a wine glass.

[At Københavnske Øldage 2005] A red-brown beer with no head. The aroma is sweet and slightly spicy. The flavor is quite roasted and malty with hints of chocolate and with a dry end. I can’t tell the seaweed, but I like the spicyness and roastyness.

(Bottle 33 cl) Very dark, almost black. Presumably it’s filtered but pretty much without head. Low in carbonation. Quite smoked flavours - almost burned. But a rather light body. Very aromatic and lovely beer. Not sure if I can taste the added kelp though... 230904

Bottled. Near black. Neutral aroma. Roasty and medium bodied. Lightly chocolatey and well balanced. Like in the other seaweed beer I’ve try it is very hard to actually get hold of the seaweed flavour.

Bottled. Black/ruby red colour, small brownish head. Aroma is roasted malts, spices and coffee. Flavour is roasted malts, hops and coffee. Also some vegetably and salty notes. Maybe the latter ones are from the seaweed?
