Commercial Description:
Baltus, a hybrid style, is a top-fermented beer made with English floor malts, malted wheat and noble hops. A classic European yeast strain with a subtle yet discernable estery profile is employed. A warmer fermentation, followed by a period of cold conditioning serves to develop and refine this complex beer.

From a bottle purchased at some store in NY state last year. Pours a dark, partially hazy brown with no head. aged, dusty malt, dark fruits, molasses/carmelized sugars and red wine. Flavor starts with notes of dates, figs, then molasses/brown sugar, rich caramel, some light (perceived) spiciness, cola, fruity esters, herbal hops, light tobacco and champagne. Leaves somewhat of a cabernet-like aftertaste. Medium bodied with a moderate, slightly lively carbonation. A bit sweet for my tastes but an interesting beer overall

Entered to celebrate my 14,000th review. Bottled. A hazy dark red beer with a thin tan head. The aroma is very sweet with notes of over ripe fruits and prunes as well as hints of oxidation. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, alcohol, over ripe fruits, and red wine grapes, leading to a dry alcoholic finish where notes of malt and straw lingers. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

(bottle thanks OSLO!) Pours a dark reddish brown with just a scant off-white head. Aromas of strawberry, light butterscotch, and even a hint of sourness that imparts an oak-like character to the aroma. This is very unique, and these strange smells all blend together very well. The flavor is also strange as well, with a big taste of prune that rounds out to a nice toffee-like sweetness on the finish. Little spikes of the sourness/tartness present in the aroma also dance on the tongue. This is a nice contrast here. Mouthfeel is medium and the carbonation is minimal. This beer has held up remarkably well, and gets bonus points for being unusual yet drinkable. Thanks Al!

[Bottle] Pours deep reddish-brown with a small light beige head. Aroma is really weird, with aceton, alcohol, malt, raisin, and a spice--cardamom (ok, I’m not positive about that, but it’s what came to mind when I smelled it). Oddly, the aroma reminded me of a sweeter, toned down Rodenbach Grand Cru at times. The taste is mildly tart, with some alcohol, light oxidation towards the back, some malt, and a touch of green grape. Decent mouthfeel, very smooth, and has a long finish. This was not nearly as oxidized as the Perkunos Hammer that I had before it, but it is showing slight signs of age. Overall a very strange beer that was more tart than I had expected, but was enjoyable and leaves me intrigued as to how the next bottle will taste.

T3. Lots of haze and yeast. Orange in the glass with a little head. Nose is sweet and hot. Butterscotch flavor moved to fruit. Alcohol hints.

12 oz bottle provided by alohac at Toncatchers T3. Light brown pour with no head. The aroma was that of a barley-wine with a touch of alcohol. The flavor was sweet with dark fruits, brown sugar and a small amount of alcohol. The palate was slightly thin. Overall: I thought this was a bit oxidized, but still quite drinkable. Thanks Christian.

Served from a bottle at toncatchers T3 tasting! Thanks to stefanje, lagunitasfan, weeheavysd, fordest, wetherel, alohac and of course toncatcher for suppling the house and grub. I always love trying retired Heavyweight beers. Thank you Christian. Why in the heck are they gone? This was a nice strong ale. Malty, brown sugar, with fruits. Very nice.
