Commercial Description:
Baltus, a hybrid style, is a top-fermented beer made with English floor malts, malted wheat and noble hops. A classic European yeast strain with a subtle yet discernable estery profile is employed. A warmer fermentation, followed by a period of cold conditioning serves to develop and refine this complex beer.

Pours a very dark mahogany with a small, pillowy white head. The aroma is strikingly nice; a solid carmael matliness with a distinct Belgian-esque berry/vinous character. The flavor is rather strong on the alcohol and quite sour, with a lot of dryness and fruitness not unlike a red wine. Very estery. This a weird, but good, beer.

cloudy rusty gold color, thin foamy umber colored head. aroma is sourish wheat malts, a llittle citrusy like dried lemons. flavor starts the same, wheaty sour/tart malt, then woody, yeasty and quick candi sweetness. slick palate. right back to citrusy hops for the finish. yes, alcohol well hidden. I forgot what this was supposed to be while out tasting, so I had an unbiased opinion, and I thought this looked, smelled, and tasted very much like victory’s moonglow weizen bock!

12 oz bottle, poured a dark caramel color with cloudy body. Creamy textured head, color was tan/creamy. Taste is rich and sweet. We bought this ale after having an enjoyable ’tour’ of the brewery with the highlight being the owner/brewer Tom chatting about items we asked about and unique features of Heavyweight.

I had this on tap at Heavyweights and while I was sipping it Peggy (the brewery co-owner) came by and asked me if I had any questions. I agreed with her that its difficult to classify but enjoyed the blend of hops and wheat present in the beer. When I smelled it, I thought Belgian immediately because of the fruity aroma. But upon tasting it, I detected a sweet beer which presents a complex blend of its elements. The only downside to me is that its not out of the ordinary but that doesn’t negate that this is a very solid beer. I’ll try this in the bottle next and see if my rating stays the same.

On tap at Heavyweight. A dark brown pour with a small tan head which quickly dissipated. Raisins, chocolate, and slight alcohol nose. Dried fruit and malt in the taste, finished with a slightly hoppy bitterness. Alcohol well hidden in this brew.

Interesting looking bottle with an old time looking strongman pulling a rope. This poured out a semi opaque brown with a scattering of bubbles on top with no signs on a real head. No lacing was left either when this was consumed. Scents of sweet malt come through over notes of tart fruit. Taste starts off with a sticky sweetness that is accompanied by dark fruits. Overall the taste reminds me of a lighter quadruple without the spice. Aftertaste is strong with fruit and a bit of alcohol. Mouthfeel is a bit silky with about medium weight body. Decent drinkability but not one of my favorites. I would have it again though if given the chance.

Interesting. Sour yeasty aroma. Flavor is sweet with a little sour and tart. A bit bitter with a caramel finish. Cool

On tap at Andy’s. Much like hot tea with lemon and honey flavoring, but served cold. Not my favorite, to be honest. Couldn’t drink more than a round or so.
